Bloom (renaissance flute), Carol Lewis (viola da gamba), and Olav Chris Henriksen (renaissance lute), this concert plunges the audience in the time of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. In a variety of songs from the plays, from love songs and comic antics to madness and tragedy, the concert focuses exclusively on music from Shakespeare’s time, providing a fascinating view of the late 16th and early 17th century music that Shakespeare’s audiences would have heard, written by the great composers of his day (notably, Thomas Morley, Robert Johnson, and John Dowland). During the concert, the performers provide entertaining commentary on the plays, the context for the music, and the exotic historical instruments. Ensemble Chaconne celebrates its 20th season, and was acclaimed by the Portland Press Herald, among others, as “the perfect Elizabethan evening.” |
