Description:On this day in December the composer of the tune St. Louis was born 175 years ago. He was the organist at Holy Trinity Church in Philly where Phillips Brooks was the pastor. It was Redner who suggested Brooks write words for which he would compose a tune. The tune came to him appropriately enough on Christmas Eve and it was first sung Christmas 1868. Brooks of course went on to serve at Trinity in Boston but Redner stayed in Philadelphia although he died in Atlantic City where he had gone to recouperate from an illness. Have you ever know many people to recoup much of anything from Atlantic City?
